A five-month-old heifer calf wins overall champion at the N. Ireland Irish Moiled national show.
Northern Ireland Irish Moiled breeders once again turned out in full force both in numbers and quality for their annual National Show for the second year running at Randox Antrim Show.
The overall Irish Moiled supreme champion title at the N. Ireland national show at Randox Antrim show was won by Brian O’Kane and family of Martinstown, Co. Antrim with Ravelglen Ramona 422, a homebred 5-month-old heifer calf sired by the Woodbine Casper EX97, tapped out by judge Ciara White from the Woodbine Irish Moiled herd, in Co. Wexford.
Reserve overall Irish Moiled champion went to Robert Davis and family of Templepatrick, Co. Antrim for their 6-year-old stock bull, Curraghnakeely Crackerjack bred by Nigel Edwards of Tempo, Co. Fermanagh. Curraghankeely Crackerjack is sired by Thierafurth Mick.
Huge praise to Randox Antrim show cattle committee and stewards Mr & Mrs. J. Eccles who assisted Ciara in keeping the day running smoothy and on time and thank you to all the breeders who supported and took part in the (NI) Irish Moiled Cattle Society National to Sponsors of the Irish Moiled Classes – David Scott (Moyletra herd) and Robert Davis (Laurel View Equestrian Centre)
Judge’s comments:-(Ciara White)
It was an honour to be asked to judge the cattle society’s NI national at the Randox Antrim Show. Despite the weather exhibitors put in a great effort in turning out their stock to such a high standard.
The cows class was one of the most competitive of the day with a number of great quality cows entered. The cow that caught my eye in the class was Beechmount Daisy 6 and her calf presented by R&C Maxwell a great example of the breed with great locomotion and milking ability she then went on to take reserve senior champion.
1st in the senior heifer class went to Brain O’ Kanes, Ravelglen Ramona 315 a lovely strong senior heifer.
1st place was hard fought for in the junior heifer class with not much separating all entered. Ravelglen Ramona 315 a typically marked heifer with great conformation was the winner she then went on to take junior champion just ahead of Sam Smiley’s in reserve, Glassdrummond Cherry 128.
In the heifer calf class it was Ravelglen Ramona 422 that caught my eye the moment she entered the ring for me, she has great presence in the ring while being a great example of the breed with fabulous conformation and a temperament to match, she went on to take calf champion and overall champion no small feat for such a young animal. Reserve calf champion and winner in the bull class was Curraghnakeely Crescendo by N&N Moilies this bull calf is a lovely example of the breed, and it will be nice to see how he develops in the future.
In the senior bull class, there were 3 great bulls all good examples of the breed straight in out of the field and in their working clothes showing just how docile and versatile the breed is. 1st in this class went to Curraghnakeely Crackerjack presented by Robert Davis and bred by N&M moiles. This bull has great strength, depth and character a lovely breed example, Crackerjack then went onto take the senior champion and reserve overall champion.
Champion pair went to Robert Davis with reserve going to R&C Maxwell.
Thank you to the show organisers for their hard work and hospitality it was a great day and thankfully the rain cleared while we were showing. Thanks also to the competitors for presenting such great quality stock and putting in such effort despite the weather turning out the stock to such a high standard.
