Welcome

We warmly welcome anyone wishing to join the Irish Moiled Cattle Society. We have 18 Directors and three constituencies – Republic of Ireland, Great Britain and Northern Ireland.  Becoming a member is easy and can all be completed online. You do not have to breed Irish Moiled’s to become a member – you can simply support us if interested in the breed.

Top Tips for our Members . . .

In 2021 our DNA method changed from Microsatellite (MS) to Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP). All registrations must be completed via SNP testing and only in exceptional circumstances will we use MS testing if applicable.

Where MS testing is required, we will also need to SNP test in order to register future progeny. An easy way to remember is that every animal breeding or intended for breeding MUST have a SNP profile.

SNP testing is – pre-paid, pre-ordered and pre-printed complete with a QR unique to the animal detailed on the hair kit/card. These kits/cards can take up to two weeks. Hair must be freshly ‘PLUCKED’ not cut. The abbreviation SNP does not mean snip/cut. DNA is gathered from the bulb root of the hair follicle hence the need to pluck. Never write on a hair kit/card. Always use one card per bag. Do not mix or contaminate.

When registering animals please ensure that your herd is up to date. APHIS, TAURUS and BCMS are in no way linked to our IMCS herd book or software and therefore you are also required to birth notify, complete transfers and notify deaths on our Grassroots Software/IMCS Online Register for your Irish Moileds.

Please remember that to REGISTER an animal means to DNA parentage prove and if successful a pale green pedigree certificate will be issued stating the herd book number.

When registering a female or male please get in touch with the breed secretary prior to payment, stating the animals details. The Breed Secretary will then check the eligibility of the animal and confirm cost. Once paid, the kits will be ordered in due course. The kit/hair card will be posted out and must be returned by you the breeder using the envelope provided. Do not return samples to the Breed Secretary unless asked to and please ensure you check the postal service required.

A do’s and don’ts…. to make life a little easier for all!

Do not use any dashes or spaces when typing a tag number

Do not use the fada above any letters in Irish names – the software systems do not recognise this

Do not pay for something and assume we know instantly. The process will be smoother if you drop us a message to say you’ve paid.

Do not message us asking for an update for ‘that heifer’ or can I order a kit for ‘this cow’. We need a tag, confirmation of payment and your details.
