Herd Profile – INIS FRAOIGH
Denis O Boyle farms on two offshore islands, Rutland island which is about a mile out from Burtonport and Inisfree Island in Donegal, Ireland. Inisfree Island is about 3 miles from Burtonport. He keeps fifteen pedigree Irish Moiled cows and four crossbreds. Denis established his Inis Fraoigh Irish Moiled herd in 2014.
All Denis’s cattle are outliers and are only housed when calving, they graze on seaweed a lot of the time when the tide is out and then the natural grassland on the Island. The moilies are superb at foraging making sure they get plenty of nourishment that they require and if they come across something unfamiliar, they will avoid it. Denis has found the Irish Moileds to be a good hardy breed for the Islands.
Denis presently has ten of last year’s calves all bulls which will also be available for sale in the next couple of months privately.
Meantime Denis has entered for his first time a quiet young bull called Inis Fraoigh born on St. Patrick’s Day 2020 into the upcoming online timed auction Magnificent Moilie Spring Sale which takes place through Harrison & Hetherington, Auctioneers from noon Thurs 6th May concluding Sat 8th May. For further updates please follow the Irish Moiled Cattle Society Facebook page and website. Harrison & Hetherington, Auctioneers will be releasing the full catalogue of entries a week before the sale.
