Herd Profile – Rathcarn
Rathcarn farm is set on the foot of Carntogher mountain and is run by Seamus, Declan and Jimmy O’Kane (Declan’s son in the picture) We bought our first moilie cows in 2016 from the Ravalglen herd (Brian O’Kane).
Our main reason for venturing into the moiled cattle was for a beef plan (farm to fork) this has worked really well for us as we sell meat boxes locally around the townland. People keep coming back for more as the meat is consistently well marbled and full of taste. We also supply a local restaurant called Friels bar and restaurant who would put on a special of the Rathcarn beef a couple of times a year.
Our herd has now grown to 24 head and continues to grow. The moilie breed are easy maintained and very docile. We have entered the magnificent Irish moiled sale coming up on the 6th of May (our first time to enter a sale) we are really excited to give others the opportunity to breed from our herd.
With over half our calves this year being heifers we will now are now able to sell and the only reason why we are selling this heifer is because we are really pleased with our stock bull and want to keep him which means we can’t keep her line because she is related to him. Rathcarn Rhona will be up for sale on the 6th of May. A lovely heifer which will make a great cow.
Further details about the Magnificent Moilie Spring Sale by way of an Online timed auction taking place from 6th May to 8th May through auctioneers Harrison & Hetherington can be found on the Irish Moiled Cattle Society website or Facebook page.
