Fittingly in the centenary year of the Irish Moiled herdbook a new Irish Moiled breed record for a bull sold at public auction was set when eighteen-month-old bull Burren Bertie consigned by N & M Moilies (Nigel Edwards & Michelle McCauley) based at Dungannon, Co. Tyrone bred by Michelle McCauley of Ballynahinch, Co Down was sold for £3,650. Burren Bertie is from highly classified and heavily decorated bloodlines, the Pandora cow family and has all the attributes of a dual-purpose animal featuring a strong, square, deep body with stature, bridging the gap between a diary animal and a highly muscled beef animal.

A second consignment from N & M Moilies (Nigel Edwards & Michelle McCauley) and the second highest price in the Centenary Irish Moiled spring sale went to the 15-month-old heifer, Ballyreagh Lily 6824, bred by William Edwards of Tempo, Co. Fermanagh, selling for £3,450. This heifer recently claimed the junior championship ribbon at Balmoral show and was very much a popular entry in the sale. The Ballyreagh Lily cow family have consistently topped major breed sales.

Burren Bertie and Ballyreagh Lily were both purchased by Richard Robinson of Pomeroy, Co. Tyrone.
John McElroy who conservation grazes his Trory herd of Irish Moilies on the shores of Lough Erne near Enniskillen in Co. Fermanagh commanded two more of the top prices with two homebred young cows Trory Amy a first calver who sold for £3,100 to Liam Feeney and Ethan McGovern of Co. Sligo and Trory Rebecca, due to calve with her 1st calf in October sold for £2,600 to Paul Murphy of Co. Armagh.

Brian O’Kane from Martinstown, Co. Antrim also had a very successful sale when all his homebred stock of 3 females and a young bull in the sale took premium prices. Ravelglen Ramona 2 897 a well-bred heifer from one of the Ravelglen’s most sought-after female lines sold for £2,300 and Ravleglen May made £1,900 both went to the same buyer, Dermot Burke from Co. Derry. Ravelglen Dolly 853 sold for £2,250 and was snapped up by long standing Irish Moiled breeder Alan Mooney of Co. Kildare.

Two bull entries shared the £2,300 price tag. First to go was Ravelglen Tadhg put forward by Kathryn Kendal of Co. Kilkenny, this two-year-old bull is sired by the well-known highly classified bull, Woodbine Casper EX97 and was sold to Niall O’Kane of Co. Derry. The second bull to make £2,300 was purchased by Tannaghmore Farm and Gardens, Lurgan, Co. Armagh for Magheratimpany Bud belonging to Ryan and Caroline Maxwell of Co. Armagh. Bud’s dam is the prize-winning cow Beechmount Daisy.

Robert Boyle of Millisle, Co. Down had a complete clearance of his three homebred entries. All three entries were sold for £2,150. The 2 heifers, Beechmount Annika and Beechmount Charlotte 2 were purchased by the same buyer and will be making their way across the water to Owen Connolly, Dunfries, Scotland. Beechmount Austin, a quality young bull was purchased by Irish Moiled breeders Ryan and Caroline Maxwell of Co. Armagh.
