Spectacular Show Season Finale at Gosford
The Irish Moiled Cattle Society (IMCS) held their National Show once again at the RBST NI Support Group Show and Sale at Gosford Forest Park. It has been a great show season for the breed kicked off with the return to Balmoral Show. This has certainly inspired more breeders to get on the local show circuit and despite the rain spirits were not dampened for the show. A turnout of near 30 top quality animals, all of which were perfectly prepared for the show ring made for a spectacular sight for those who came to watch.
Right: Sam and John Smiley with Champion Irish Moiled and Reserve champion of the show Glassdrummond Cherry44th with Basil Lawson Interbreed judge.
This year's judge was recently retired IMCS Chairman Mr Richard McConnell, who himself is no stranger to the RBST show ring having won breed champion at the show 5 times over the years but he couldn't help but be impressed by the line up of cattle in front of him.
There were notable turnouts in the Cow, Bull and Heifer Calf classes but the accolade of Breed Champion went to Sam Smiley with a superb 1st calver Glassdrummond Cherry 44th who also collected breed champion at Balmoral and Castlewellan Shows this year. A close reserve was Tommy Jackson's powerful mature bull, Macmann Apple.
The Irish Moileds then went on to compete very successfully in the interbreed classes with interbreed judge for the day Mr Basil Lawson from Fife awarding Sam Smiley, Reserve Interbreed Champion with his Cherry 44th. Congratulations to Duncan Mc Dowell for collecting Overall Supreme Interbreed Champion with his Beef Shorthorn In Calf heifer.
In the Tesco Interbreed Derby, Tully Farm's mature cow, Aughnakealie Bonnie caught the eye of Mr Lawson claiming Interbreed Senior Derby Champion. Robert Boyles In calf heifer Beechmount Snowy got Reserve in the Junior Interbreed Derby and Nigel Edwards' heifer calf Curraghnakeely Cherry the First also claimed Reserve in the Calf Interbreed Derby. The final success of the day was when Nigel Edwards won the Interbreed pairs with his young bull and cow. Mr Lawson was greatly impressed with all the Irish Moiled entries put before him with many excellent examples of the breed.
The Society would like to thank their sponsors, The Ark Open Farm, Bangor and the RBST NI Support Group for facilitating the breed once again at the show and looks forward to another great show season in 2014
