Irish Moiled National Champion wins RBST Interbreed Cattle Champion of Champions at Gosford

Robert Boyle from Millisle had tremendous success with his Irish Moiled cow, Milltown Pink Lady bred by Tommy Jackson of Saintfield, winning senior breed champion and overall breed champion at the Northern Ireland Irish Moiled national show, with even further success afterwards winning the senior interbreed derby champion and then the RBST cattle rare and traditional breed champion of champions.  This young cow, previously this year had been awarded supreme breed champion at Balmoral show and on any of her outings to shows this year had been unbeaten in the cow class.

Rachel Armour from Maghera won junior breed champion and overall reserve breed champion and with her maiden heifer Beechmount Jasmine bred by Robert Boyle, this heifer had continually been a prize-winner at a number of shows around N. Ireland this summer, collecting championship awards such as reserve junior champion at Balmoral show, breed champion and rare breed interbreed champion at Lurgan show and overall rare breed cattle champion at Ballymena show.

N & M Moilies of Dungannon won calf breed champion with their February born heifer calf Curraghnakeely Bluebell bred by Nigel Edwards of Tempo, this young heifer calf on her two only previous outings earlier this year at Castlewellan Show and Clogher Valley Show had picked up a junior calf champion award and a reserve champion award, respectively.

Reserve senior breed champion was won by Robert Boyle with the winner of the senior heifer class, Knowehead Betty, bred by David & Valerie Orr of Ballygowan. It was the first show outing for this well-balanced in-calf heifer.

Reserve junior breed champion went to Brian O’Kane of Martinstown with his homebred yearling bull Ravelglen Rocky. Ravelglen Rocky featured prominently in the show ring last year as a calf with the most notable wins being the calf breed champion at the national show, Gosford and reserve junior calf champion at the Pedigree Calf Fair and this year taking breed champion at Antrim show.

Reserve breed calf champion also went to Brian O’Kane with the young June born, homebred calf, Ravelglen Dolly a second prize winner in the heifer calf class which was tapped out ahead of the winner in the bull calf class.

The senior bull class was won by Robert Boyle with Tyrone Firecracker bred by Eddie Giboney of Beragh, this powerful Irish Moiled bull has been another very strong contender in the show circuit this summer winning the senior bull class at Balmoral Show and winning Overall Reserve Breed Champion at Castlewellan Show.

The bull calf class was won by N & M Moiles with Curraghnakeely Masterpiece bred by Nigel Edwards, this strong January born bull calf has been picking up rosettes around the shows this year following in his mother’s footsteps Curraghnakeely Sylvia who had previously won Balmoral breed champion and the National show breed champion at Gosford.

The Pairs Class was won by Robert Boyle with Milltown Pink Lady and Tyrone Firecracker, first prize winners in the cow class and senior bull class respectively.  This pair went on to win the RBST Reserve Interbreed Pairs.

There was a fantastic turnout of the younger Irish Moiled generation, their enthusiasm, attitude and skill displayed in the ring was clear to be seen and probably was the hardest class to judge.  John Smiley was chosen as Champion Irish Moiled Young Handler taking home the Brian Burnett Cup and Reserve Irish Moiled Champion Young Handler went to Rachel Armour.  Success was not to stop here for the Irish Moiled young handlers when Cole Hogg went on to win the RBST Interbreed Young Handler Championship.

Brian O’Kane was presented with St. Mars Rose Bowl for the most points accumulated at Shows throughout 2018 with the Ravelglen show team, and Rachel Armour was presented with the N & M Moilies Cup for the exhibitor having attending the most shows in 2018.

A huge ‘thank you’ to Mark McConnell for Judging the Northern Ireland Irish Moiled Cattle Society National.  The Society would also like to thank the RBST NI for hosting the Irish Moiled National alongside their Show held at Gosford. To Gary Hanna for his excellent stewarding and to all the exhibitors both young and old who took part in the National, it was a tremendous turnout of cattle representing the Irish Moiled Breed.
