Young Handlers to the Fore at Irish Moiled National Show

The weather was very kind to all at the Annual Rare Breeds Survival Trust Show and Sale at Gosford Forest Park on Saturday 6th September, the venue for the Irish moiled National Show 2014.

A good entry of cattle was seen across all classes however the greatest spectacle was the big turnout of Irish Moiled Young Handlers. The Irish Moiled Cattle Society once again sponsored the Irish Moiled entrants in the class through the Brian Burnett Fund. Each competitor received £5 for taking part and the top placed handler received an additional £10.

There was a hive of activity running up to the class as animals where matched to young handlers and white coats found so as to encourage as many young folk to have a go as possible. It was a great class to watch as every competitor handled their animal with ease, many of them practising what they had learned earlier in the summer at the ‘Irish Moiled School of Showing’ in Co Westmeath. Well done to every competitor it’s great to know the breed will be in safe hands in years to come! Congratulations to Tommy Jackson (15) from Saintfield on being the 1st placed Moilie handler.

In the Breed classes sponsored once again by The Ark Open Farm, Bangor, Judge Ms Libby Clarke, Maralin was impressed by the quality on show. First up was a strong class of cows with Aughnakealie Ann an 11 year old cow from Tommy Jackson, Saintfield, taking the top prize, Ann is certainly retiring from the show circuit on a high!

Next up was the in calf heifers and it was Robert Boyle, Millisle with Beechmount Daisy a strong animal in 1st place with Curraghnakeely Cherry the First from Nigel Edwards, Tempo in 2nd.
In the Maiden heifer class a good number of animals where on show with Curraghnakeely Tansy from Michelle McCauley taking 1st with Beechmount Daisy 2nd beside her.

Next followed the bulls with an entry of two powerful animals, however it was senior bull, Macmann Apple from Tommy Jackson, the winner over Knowehead Reuben from Nigel Edwards.

The classes finished with the bull and heifer calf classes, often the most challenging due to the wide range in age and growth. In the bull calves The Ark Open Farms Donardgrange Superstar, exhibited by Nigel Edwards edged it over Milltown Big Bad Bob from Tommy Jackson in 2nd, both two promising young bulls.

Another strong entry of calves was seen in the heifer class but it was Curraghnakeely Sylvia the First from Nigel Edwards in 1st place with Sam Smileys Glassdrummond Lily 35th in 2nd.
Sylvia’s success continued taking Junior Champion with Donardgrange Superstar in Reserve and Sylvia kept going on to win overall Breed Champion with Senior bull Macmann Apple in Reserve.

In the interbreed classes Irish Moileds had success also with Nigel Edwards Reserve in the pairs. In the Tesco Interbreed Derby which entrants qualify for throughout the show season Curraghnakeely Sylvia the First took reserve in the calf derby. Beechmount Daisy 2nd was reserve champion in the Intermediate Derby and it was a close call in the Senior Derby with Macmann Apple also coming in Reserve Senior Derby Champion.

The Irish Moiled Cattle Society wish to thank The Ark Open Farm for their continued support and Burren Pedigree Livestock for supplying championship sashes. Our thanks must also go to Mr Brian Burnett, Edinburgh for his continual support of Irish Moileds and our Young Handlers and to the RBST NI Support group for facilitating the breed at the show.
